“Staying Focused From Start to Finish Is Key”

Chelsea forward Joao Pedro has attributed the team’s recent inconsistencies to lapses in concentration, while also downplaying concerns about his own fitness.

The 24-year-old was the hero in Chelsea’s victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday but also featured in the frustrating 2-2 draw against Champions League debutants Qarabag.

Reflecting on the match in Azerbaijan, Joao Pedro said:

“We started well but then made things more complicated than necessary. We came here to win but ended up with a draw. When you lose focus, the other team will capitalize.”

He added:

“There’s a lot to learn. Playing in the Champions League demands full concentration. If we want to win games, we need to maintain focus for the entire 90 minutes. Dropping points in the Premier League makes it harder to secure Champions League football next season.”

Joao Pedro’s fitness has been closely managed by manager Enzo Maresca, who has said the forward is monitored on a “game-by-game” basis.

The Brazil international commented on his condition:

“They’re trying to manage me carefully. I feel good and want to be available for every match. It’s challenging, but I aim to be on the pitch whenever possible.”
