Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has called on Chelsea’s senior players to challenge Enzo Maresca’s frequent team selections, highlighting the potential impact of constant squad rotation on player morale.
The Italian manager made seven changes to his starting lineup for Wednesday’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Qarabag, marking the fifth consecutive match where at least seven alterations were made.
Chelsea have now made 85 changes in just 16 games this season, the highest total of any Premier League side.
Rooney, speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, said:
“The players want to play and develop relationships on the pitch. When you keep chopping and changing, they won’t be happy, and that can come back to bite you.
If you’re getting results consistently, it’s fine, but when results don’t match expectations, questions need to be asked.”
The former England captain believes that responsibility falls on captain Reece James and other senior squad members to raise concerns with the manager:
“Most clubs have a leadership group, and as a group, you have to be willing to go and question the manager.
People talk about ‘player power,’ but this isn’t about that. I’d be concerned if the team kept changing constantly. If I were in that leadership group, I’d be speaking to my teammates saying, ‘Look, this isn’t working for us.’”
Rooney’s comments underline the delicate balance between rotation to manage fitness and maintaining consistency for team cohesion, a challenge Maresca is currently facing as Chelsea navigate both domestic and European competitions.
