Chelsea Football Club

Founding & Origins

Henry Augustus “Gus” Mears and his brother, Joseph Theophilus Mears, conceived the idea of creating a football club in 1904. After acquiring the deeds to Stamford Bridge, their goal was to transform the athletics ground into a premier football stadium.

Initially, the brothers sought to lease Stamford Bridge to an existing club, but when Fulham declined the offer, they took a bold new direction: creating their own club. Chelsea Football Club was born in 1905, named after the neighbouring borough. Other names such as Stamford Bridge FC, London FC, and Kensington FC were considered, but “Chelsea” ultimately captured the spirit and identity of the area.
