Reece James Calls for Later Kick-Offs to Combat Extreme Heat at 2026 World Cup

England defender Reece James has urged FIFA to consider adjusting kick-off times for next year’s World Cup to help players cope with potentially sweltering summer conditions.
The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, begins on 11 June 2026. However, concerns have been raised about the extreme temperatures players could face at several host venues.
James, 25, captained Chelsea to Club World Cup success in the United States this summer, where he and his teammates endured criticism over the severe heat. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez described feeling “dizzy” while playing in what he called “very dangerous” conditions.
“It’s super difficult to play in that heat, especially for us coming from England – there’s nothing like it here,” James explained.
Research from Queen’s University Belfast suggests that temperatures at 14 of the 16 stadiums slated for the 2026 World Cup could reach potentially dangerous levels during the tournament.
During Chelsea’s training sessions in Philadelphia, temperatures soared to 37°C, with humidity levels of 45% making it feel closer to 45°C.
Manager Thomas Tuchel believes England would benefit from later kick-offs when temperatures are cooler. James agreed:
“Later kick-offs when it’s not so hot and humid would definitely help.”
To prepare, England are planning a warm-weather training camp in Florida and will develop a “heat-proof” game plan, according to assistant coach Anthony Barry.
When asked if FIFA had contacted him for feedback following the Club World Cup, James said:
“No, I haven’t been asked about kick-off times. I’m sure they’ve spoken to managers or club staff for input.”
FIFA is expected to schedule World Cup matches for major European teams late at night UK time to mitigate the heat, likely mirroring the Club World Cup schedule, where matches began at 17:00 BST and continued at 20:00, 23:00, and 02:00.
Reflecting on his experience, James added:
“You feel the heat as soon as you step outside the hotel. Once you’re on the pitch, you start to adapt the longer you’re there. The conditions were tough and the pitches weren’t the best, but hopefully by the World Cup it will be better.”
England face Serbia at Wembley Stadium on Thursday before traveling to Albania on Sunday, as they continue their preparations for next year’s tournament.
